Tattoo Basics Many people today have at least one tattoo, if not more. Tattoos are more common than ever
before, but few people know the science behind them.
Getting a Tattoo
Tattoos are made with ink. Tattoo ink is made from metal that is ground, dried, and mixed with
water. The ink is then put on with a needle, either by hand or with a special gun. For a tattoo to
stay, it must be made under the skin. Any kind of mark made on top of the skin would flake off.
So the needle (and its ink) must reach the middle part of the skin.
"Erasing" a Tattoo
Once the needle has done its job, the ink will stay for good. But if later in life you want to
"erase" your tattoo, a doctor will need to do it. A strong beam of light is aimed at the tattoo.
This beam will heat up the ink under the skin and cause it to fade. At the same time, though, it
will heat up your skin. For this reason, "erasing" or getting rid of a tattoo can hurt more than
the needle that put it there.
