“In the Black Sea, blooms of Mnemiopsis jellyfish are responsible for millions of dollars in losses for the local fishery industries who catch and sell anchovies.” A once thriving fishing industry in the black sea, responsible for catching anchovies is now experiencing some difficult times.  In the Black Sea the local fishermen are encountering losses due to an infamous sea species named, Mnemiopsis jellyfish.  

It’s possible the solution to this problem is for fishermen to shift focus and become the predator of the Mnemiopsis jellyfish. Over time the jellyfish will decrease and allow the anchovy population to thrive once again.

Mnemiopsis jellyfish are a big problem to the fish industries near the Black Sea. This species of jellyfish travel in groups called blooms and devour all the larvae and eggs of the fish in the sea, therefore there is none left for the fishermen to sell and get money.

Recent studies have shown that Mnemiopsis jellyfish are cannibalistic species. “It regularly washes up on Baltic shores and researchers now believe it eats its own larvae when food is scarce.”  This demonstrates that this is a highly invasive species which can cause damage to an already struggling ecosystem.

Problems in the Black Sea began before the Mnemiopsis jellyfish was introduced into the aquatic ecosystem.  The fishing industry became severely overfished and was already struggling.  Sometime after this, the Mnemiopsis entered the Black Sea as an invasive species in a struggling ecosystem.  In a healthy ecosystem, small fish keep the jellyfish population in check by eating their young larvae.

It’s not only the Black Sea that is experiencing trouble with catching fish, but most of the world’s oceans have been experiencing enormous blooms of jellyfish, apparently caused by overfishing, declining water quality, and rising sea temperatures.

Despite all the problems Mnemiopsis jellyfish have caused, there are solutions to the growing numbers of the Mnemiopsis. A different type of species can be the predator of the Mnemiopsis jellyfish and make the ecosystem balanced in the sea. Or maybe if people fish less than the fish population could flourish once again.
