Since it’s the month of October, it is a great time to get acquainted with one of the most interesting (which happens to be a favorite of mine) genres in literature -- Gothic literature! Today you will create your own story using sentence clues from what I give you during our class. To gain some context, here are some of the essential characteristics of the genre.
Decaying, haunted setting
Mysterious architecture and surroundings externally and internally
Encounters with the supernatural and/or the beyond
Curses, generational tales, and prophecies
Intense emotion and reactions to what is occurring
Showcases of the “horror” in life - the grotesque, the unexpected, and the unrealistic
Showcases of the “terror” in life - What hides in plain sight coming to life, preying on one’s fear and anxieties, and what lies in the subconscious (what we don’t actively think about.)
*You should have about one to two paragraphs by the time we finish our meeting. For your independent work, you should continue your story to make it a few pages in length. (2-3 pages double-spaced.)

The Legend of the Danske

Walking through a Louisiana swamp at night, the moon is full and the fog hangs low on the surface of an old bayou. All around, there is the movement of unseen life – the rustle of the swamp rabbit in the underbrush, the hoot of a barred owl, and maybe even a soft splash of an alligator as it slithers down the bank. Suddenly, the night is pierced by a distant howl. Could it be the howl of a ghost of the nearly extinct red wolf that once roamed the swamps and marshes of Louisiana? Or…could it be…a “Danske”?

The Danske (or loup-garou) is a monster from Cajun folklore. In the legend, this beast is often described as having the body of a man and the head of a wolf or a dog and prowls Louisiana swamps looking for misbehaving children. The stories were most likely inspired by European stories of werewolves that the Cajun people brought with them as they migrated to Louisiana. How a person transforms into the monster doesn’t seem to be entirely clear. Nor is it clear if the Danske only prowls during a full moon, like a werewolf. One thing that does seem certain, though, is that some of the Danske preferred haunts are the swamps of central and eastern Louisiana. Tragically, many of the swamps that helped shape Cajun culture and inspire stories of the Danske have been cut off from the Mississippi River that once built and maintained them. River levees constructed for flood protection and navigation have starved many swamp areas of sediment and flowing water, leaving trees standing in stagnant waters that are too deep for new trees to sprout, and making them increasingly vulnerable to rising sea levels and storms that bring in salty water from the Gulf that could destroy these freshwater ecosystems.

the play romeo and juliet was one of the most famous love tragedies ever written. this love story unfortunately had a fatal ending. many people argue over why the lovers had died, was it over free will or fate?  

the death of romeo and juliet was partially because of free will. the fact that romeo and juliet got married knowing that there was a bitter feud between their families, the montague and capulet’s. this feud brought on many problems, such as the murder of tybalt by romeo. juliet knew that this might be a problem for her and romeo. juliet had said: “what’s in a name”? which explains her ill fate of being a capulet and romeo being a montague. when romeo tells his servant “ ay, mine own…show more content…

i believe they had died over the love they had for each other, strong enough that their lives could end so suddenly if something horrible had come between them, and that was exactly how it happened. this tragedy occurred within five days of the two meeting, they experienced love at first sight, got married and quickly were dead. free will became a part of this when juliet decided to take friar laurence’s advise in inhaling a potion that will make people assume she is died but will awake in 42 hours prier to when she took it. when romeo had heard the news that juliet was dead, he assumed it was true, and responded with the line; “well juliet, i will lay with thee tonight”. to me this line indicated how he feels for juliet by dying in her will. the fact that free will didn’t take control of the story; it left fate to be the murder of the lovers. fate first kicked in when their eyes met at the capulet party. when romeo and juliet spoke, their words had powerful contentment; they had such a strong feeling for one another that they could lay in each other’s arms forever. their happiness didn’t last long; there were many reasons for this, for example; the marriage lord capulet arranged between paris and juliet. i believe that the plot of the play thus far leads the audience to believe that the deaths were a result of fate. the last act will determine once and for all if it is fate or free will. romeo again challenges fate.
