In 1960, Lewis created "good trouble" when he was arrested for trying to eat at a "Whites only" lunch counter. In 1961, he was part of a protest known as Freedom Rides. He was beaten up for
sitting next to White friends on a bus. During a 1965 march for voting rights, an Alabama state
trooper hit him hard on the head. Lewis's skull was broken. Good trouble, Lewis knew, even
though he wondered if he would die day.
