I think humans have rejected the creature because we don't accept someone different. Even though we have many diverse cultures and religions, many of these people were a minority and had to fight against the "system" in order to thrive today. His interactions with humans corrupted his character because they maltreated him. We can consider this as an obvious cause and effect situation. They treated him like a monster, so he simply became one.
