You are now a teacher, and you notice that many of your students are consistently making the dividing-out mistake that appears below. Some of the students even admit to knowing the method was wrong as soon as you point it out. Create a visual to help your students stop making this common mistake: fraction numerator up diagonal strike x squared plus 3 x − 4 over denominator up diagonal strike x squared − 2 x − 8 end fraction .

Your lesson should do the following:

Explain why the dividing-out method is incorrect. You may want to start with a simpler expression and work your way up to polynomials. (For example, compare fraction numerator 3 left parenthesis 5 right parenthesis over denominator 3 end fraction and fraction numerator 3 plus 5 over denominator 3 end fraction.)
Explain when you can cancel a number that is in both the numerator and denominator and when you cannot cancel out numbers that appear in both the numerator and the denominator.
Share tricks, reminders, memory devices, or other methods to help students catch themselves before making this common mistake.
Post your video or series of images. Post answers to the following questions:

A. Why do you think the mistake shown here is such a common one?
B. Have you ever made this mistake before? What helped you stop making this mistake? What will help you stop making this mistake in the future?

in a place once known as north america, now known as panem, is a very rich city surrounded by twelve districts. every year because this very rich city, known as the capitol, is so rich and likes to think they control all the districts - which they do - there is something known as the hunger games! this is where two children, one boy and one girl from each district from the ages of twelve to eighteen, have to leave their families and compete in the hunger games, a live event that is aired on tv's all over panem. when katniss everdeen, aged sixteen from district 12, has to volunteer to take the place of her twelve-year-old sister prim after prim's name is called forth to become the 23rd member to compete in the 74th hunger games, she promises to prim that she will win! katniss doesn't believe she's coming out alive - but she's not going down without a fight.

because district 12 is so poor, katniss has been close to death many times from starvation but she's made it through it. but this is a different kind of close to death; this katniss doesn't know if she can survive.

she doesn't want to hurt, or kill anyone but when it comes down to it katniss' instinct is to survive. but when she starts to have confusing feelings about the boy from her district who is also her fellow contender, things get worse, and then she teams up with the girl from district 11 and only one person can survive. but who will it be? will her feelings get the better of her? will she let someone else win so they don't have to die? if katniss is going to win she's going to have to be brutal. she's going to have to kill!

in night, why are wiesel and his father evacuated from the auschwitz concentration camp? a massive escape makes the nazis question the security of auschwitz. they are assigned to work as laborers in a factory at another camp, buna. hitler has ordered that all remaining jews be relocated within german borders. the german army needs the camp guards to go to the battle front for a last-chance defense.
