Hi, I'm Taima, and I'm 14 years old. I've been wanting to write a book, and I finally came up with an idea that I think would work. Here's my idea: An Indian girl from Fiji moves to America, and goes to a public school in Chicago. She's picked on by her classmates, and is self-conscious about who she is, and thinks that it's wrong for her to be her. Eventually, she meets 2 classmates. One is picked on for being in a wheelchair, and the other is picked on for being larger than any other student their age. I told my dad about this idea, but he said that I could never do it because I'm not Indian. The thing is, that I grew up with an Indian family and culture, and even though I'm white, he says I shouldn't be able to write a book about an experience I haven't gone through. An author I look up to is RJ Palacio, who wrote the famous and well-known book, Wonder. She didn't go through what the character in her story went through, however, she still wrote her book. Personally, I think my dad's wrong about how I shouldn't write a book about another girl's cultural experience that I haven't gone through, but that's just my thoughts regarding it. Please let me know in the comments if my dad is right or am I because I really need to know if I should write this book or not.
