My Response
Jay desperately wanted his grandfather's palomino mare,
Bettina. His grandfather offered to sell it to him, saying
that, "Kids today don't know the meaning of hard work. In
my day, we worked for everything we got." To earn money,
Jay got a job at the Sac n' Pac bagging groceries every day
after school. His grandfather came into the store
occasionally and tried to give Jay a big tip for bringing the
groceries out to his car, but Jay would always smile and
refuse. Jay enjoyed earning his own money, but he knew it
would take him a long time to earn enough to buy Bettina.
One day, as Jay walked home from work, he saw his
grandfather's truck pulling an empty horse trailer. His
grandfather told Jay that he'd just dropped Bettina off at
Jay's family barn and reminded the boy that Bettina liked a
carrot after being ridden. As his grandfather drove away,
Jay smiled and rushed home to see his new horse.
