Read the passage. Heather was almost paralyzed by the heat and humidity. She sat on the porch of the bungalow, sipping lemonade while the sun beat down savagely on the tile roof.
“So this is India,” Heather said to herself. The bungalow in which she was staying during her month-long vacation belonged to her grandparents. The house was near Calcutta, India’s largest city. Heather had never been to India before, and she longed to see it all, from the parched desert to the snow-covered mountains. Still, she knew that the country was too vast to be seen in only one month.
Heather’s daydream was interrupted by a loud screech coming from the edge of the yard. Tommie, her grandmother’s cat, streaked by, his fur standing on end. Heather walked toward the edge of the porch to see what had scared the cat. A large cobra slithered through the grass. Heather froze as the snake drew closer to the house and to her. . . .
