Therefore, they may be living on their own due to their mother not being around (cause mama wasn't home) and nothing is mentioned about a father, grandparents, etc., but a sibling is mentioned. To me, this poem is all about the struggle of two siblings who can't afford most things. Though not much is told about them in detail, many conclusions can be drawn, like how they are poor and they are alone. Hope this helps in some way.
