The first man to swim across the English Channel was Captain Matthew Webb in 1875. The passage below is adapted from an eyewitness account of his swim. Read it carefully, and then
answer the questions that follow.
A more beautiful morning than that of the 24th August last could not be conceived. No wind,
no waves, but little tide, and the sea presenting that rarely calm appearance as if oil had been
poured upon the waters. At four minutes before one o'clock, Captain Webb, well smothered
in porpoise grease, dived in from the end of the Admiralty Pier. It was a beautiful, bright,
sunshiny day; and as he swam away from the pier, his broad shoulders shooting through the
water, and gleaming in the light of the sun, he very much resembled some large seal or huge
fish, not merely in smell, but in appearance.
