On Monday, the 18th of August, 1572, there was a splendid festival at the Louvre Palace. The ordinarily gloomy windows of the ancient royal residence were brilliantly lit. The squares and streets next to it, usually so solitary after Saint Germain had struck the hour of nine, were crowded with people, although it was past midnight.
The vast throng resembled, in the darkness, a black and tumbling sea, each billow of which makes a roaring breaker. This sea flowed through the Rue des Fossés and the Rue de l'Astruce. It surged against the base of the walls of the Louvre Palace and against the Hôtel de Bourbon, which faced it on the other side.
The court was celebrating the marriage of Madame Marguerite de Valois. She was the daughter of Henry II and sister of King Charles IX, with Henry de Bourbon, King of Navarre. That very morning, on a stage erected at the entrance to Notre Dame, the Cardinal de Bourbon had united the young couple with the usual ceremonial observed at the marriages of the royal daughters of France.

A few months after the Queen's death, the Prince of Navarre, or rather, as he was then styled, the King, came to Paris in deep mourning, attended by eight hundred gentlemen, all in mourning habits. He was received with every honor by King Charles and the whole Court, and, in a few days after his arrival, our marriage was solemnized with all possible magnificence. The King of Navarre and his attendants put off their mourning and dressed themselves in the most costly manner. The whole Court, too, was richly attired; all which you can better conceive than I am able to express.
For my own part, I was set out in a most royal manner. I wore a crown on my head with the "coat," or regal gown of ermine, and I blazed in diamonds. My blue-colored robe had a train to it of four ells (15 feet) in length, which was supported by three princesses. A platform had been raised, some height from the ground, which led from the Bishop's palace to the Church of Notre Dame. It was hung with cloth of gold, and below it stood the people in throngs to view the procession, stifling with heat. We were received at the church door by the Cardinal de Bourbon, who officiated for that day, and pronounced the wedding benediction.
