Hamlet decided to organize a play in which the King's conscience would be pronged if he was involved in the death of Hamlet's father. The King in question is Claudius, Hamlet's uncle. The actors acted so well in the play that Hamlet who had been in a melancholic mood was excited at their performance. Hamlet was impressed at the fact that the actors and audience were emotional about things that were not real while he could not fully express his feelings about the death of his father because he did not know all that transpired.

At the beginning of the scene, Hamlet was portrayed as being sad because of his love for Ophelia. The King devices several means to make him come off from that bad mood.
