The Devil and Tom Walker Irving’s didactic short story, The Devil and Tom Walker, presents Tom a man who is filled with greed, selfishness, and hypocritical when greeted by a devil who eventually buys Tom’s soul. Irving directly tells the readers what a bad man Tom is when he says "There lived near this place a meagre, miserly fellow, of the name of Tom Walker." When he says this, the audience learns that Tom does not like to spend any money, for any circumstance. Later on in the story, we find out that Tom eventually does bargain with the devil to get the money he desires. It is also stated that "He proposed, therefore, that Tom should employ it in the black traffic; that is to say, that he should fit out a slave-ship. This, however, Tom resolutely refused; he was bad enough in all conscience, but the devil himself could not tempt him to turn slave-trader." From this we learn that Tom is hypocritical because he believes that slave trading would go against his conscience, however he has shown lack of a conscience on multiple occasions. Further into the story Tom agrees to become a usurer and extorts money from desperate people, which disproves that he is a good person, proving he doesn't have a good conscience. The short story also states: "Tom consoled himself for the loss of his property, with the loss of his wife, for he was a man of fortitude. He even felt something like gratitude toward the black woodsman, who, he considered, had done him a kindness." This shows the reader that Tom is selfish and did not even care about his poor wife, this factor really sums up that Tom is not a good person, and deserves what eventually happens to him. The short story The Devil and Tom Walker written by Irving, allows the audience to see what happens when people are greedy, selfish, and hypocritical like Tom Walker
