In 1871 two little children who had been playing around on a farm just outside of a town known as Hope Town were going to find a strange-looking stone. By the time the stone got to Cape Town it was identified as the Hope Diamond it was 21 and a half carats in size. The
authority took one look at the potential riches within the soil and said we hadbetter annex this area. So they annexed the area. They turned it into a separate
crown colony which they named Griqualand, and they then changed the name of Griqualand to Kimberly.
