Passage 1 Daniel Boone is an important figure in America's westward movement. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1735. Boone liked to explore the
woods when he was a boy. He moved to North Carolina when he was thirteen. As he got older, he felt more and more at home in the forest. As an
adult in the 1760s and '70s, Boone helped create the Wilderness Road. This was a trail leading across the Appalachian Mountains, from Virginia to
Kentucky. Over 200,000 people used the road before 1850.
Passage 2
In the early 1800s, farmers in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois needed a way to get their crops to the markets on the East Coast.
The farmers used wagons to get their crops to Lake Erie. From there, the crops had a long, difficult trip north through the St. Lawrence River or east
over the Appalachian Mountains to New York City. The Governor of New York decided to build a canal to shorten the trip. A canal is a man-made
river that allows boats to travel in either direction. The Erie Canal was finished in 1825. It led from Lake Erie to the Hudson River. Farmers could load
their crops onto boats in Lake Erie. There, the boat would travel on the canal to the Hudson River, and then south on the river to New York City.
What is the difference in structure between the two passages?
