Wolves in Yellowstone The wolf population in Yellowstone National Park was nonexistent due to overhunting and the loss of habitats in the early 1900s. To help correct the problem, in 1995 41 wild wolves from Canada and Montana were released into Yellowstone. As of 2016, there are approximately 98 wolves in the park. While environmentalists are relieved to have a safe environment for wolves, many are not happy with the results. Since the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone, the population of elk has decreased. This is because elk are the main food source for wolves. Also, the wolves are leaving the boundaries of the park to hunt cattle in the surrounding areas. This infuriates the cattle ranchers in the area who are losing their livestock.
