encountered Du Bois's description of the "double-consciousness" he says African Americans
experience and Johnson's description of the "dual personality" he says African Americans
develop
What does each term really mean? Think about your own life. Have you experienced a double-
consciousness in some area of your life or have you ever had to maintain two versions of yourself
because some person or some group wouldn't accept your real self?
For your post, first explain "double-consciousness" in your own words. Use an example from the
readings to help clarify your thoughts. Second, explain "dual personality" in your own words. Use
another example from the readings to help clarify your thoughts. Finally, share a time when you
or someone close to you experienced a double-consciousness or dual personality. Share the story.
