He wanted humans to dominate the land and other animals and so he gave them the ability to think and reason. When Zeus saw this, he was angry, because with reasoning, human beings would be unbeatable and dominate Zeus' creations. For this reason, to limit the autonomy of human beings, Zeus took away from them the possibility of producing fire on the earth.

Prometheus then resolved to steal fire from Olympus and give it to humans, allowing them to remain the true dominators of the land.

This story has a strong cultural significance, as the Greeks were very connected to knowledge, study and reasoning and used this story to explain the importance of thought, which made Zeus himself worried.
