The opening chapters of the Book of Genesis tell the story of creation. God creates Adam
and gives him a lot a latitude. There is really only one limitation: He must not eat any fruit
from one particular tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God can see that it
is not good for Adam to be alone, so Eve is created. A wily serpent tempts Eve. She eats
fruit from that tree and gets Adam to eat some, too. They both acquire knowledge, and
with it, guilt. The result is expulsion from paradise. Was it wrong for Adam and Eve to
seek knowledge? Why are they punished for it?
