What were Mavis and Merle doing when the story opened? Why?

In the beginning of the story 'Fifth Form of Justice', Mavis and Merle were busy revising their lessons and tried to study every lessons from their textbooks as they had their first exam the next day. They were sitting inside Dr Ramsay's study giving a final revision quickly
