Chapter 10 opens with Lyddie's first day in the factory, working herself out. She had not expected it to be that tiring and she at times, found it suffocating. After a hard day, she came to her room where she saw Betsy reading her novel, which was Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist". When Betsy began to read to her, she (Lyddie) began to think of Oliver Twist as her brother Charlie. This awoke her, giving her a hunger to know more about the story. She felt a familiarity in the story to that of her brother and wondered how the story ends. That was why she was very interested in the story at the end of the chapter.
