Thomas Jefferson's Mockingbirds
7 Jefferson documented his admiration for mockingbirds in his many letters and journal entries. These pieces of history verify, or confirm, Jefferson's belief that the mockingbird is superior to other birds. He often challenged his friends and associates to find a European bird that could sing as sweetly as the American mockingbird. He believed this to be a challenge that no one could meet, because in his eyes no other bird measured up to the magnificently melodious mockingbird.
