Usually whenever I run into these problems, I try to make sentences out of them in order to try and get a deeper understanding of it.

ex. The turtle's patience awed the crowd, as he was determined to sit in the dark cave with great fortitude.

This sentence makes the turtle feel courageous and wise.

The statement describing the turtle as mossy and dark make him feel more weighed down and depressed instead of "uneven" as the question states.

The last statement calling the turtle luminous and unbreakable make out the turtle as a prideful and strong turtle

Saying something is ungainly is a way of saying awkward or clumsy, therefore that choice would be your best bet.

I have absolutely no idea what this passage is about, but if you know at least a little bit of the context of the words, they can get you a long way!
