Read Chetan's report about Marco Polo, a trader from Venice, who served in the court of the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan.
In 1271, Marco Polo traveled to Asia with his father, Niccolò, and his uncle Maffeo, who had already visited China before for several years.
This was an experience that few Europeans had access to at the time, and hardly anyone could imagine it. Marco's father and uncle had promised
the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan that they would return and share more aspects of European culture with him. When Marco first saw Kublai Khan's
summer palace called Xanadu, he was in awe. He wanted to learn all he could about the Mongol culture, so he taught himself four major languages
there. This impressed Khan, who decided to hire Marco as his special assistant. Khan sent Marco to lands all over the Mongol Empire, including
Burma, India, and Tibet. Khan also made Marco the governor of a Chinese city.
