1) Fill in the chart below by doing the following (20 pts):  Choose 3 texts from 3 different authors we read in our textbook in Unit 7 on the Realism, Regionalism, Naturalism (pages 206-291). Author and poem choices are below:

 Choose a quote from the poem that demonstrates a characteristic of Realism, Naturalism, or Regionalism (see chart at the top for a list of these characteristics.
 Rewrite the quote in your own words, and then discuss how the quote shows a specific characteristic of Realism, Naturalism or Regionalism (see chart at top).

Author
(you need 3 different authors) Title of the text from Unit 7 Short quote from author’s work (1 line, sentence, or phrase) 3+ Sentences:
Rewrite the quote in your own words, AND explain how the quote you chose shows a characteristic of Realism, Regionalism, or Naturalism
(be sure to state specifically the value you see)
Made up EXAMPLE:
Billy Williams
“My How They’ve Grown”
(be sure YOU pick a selection from Unit 7 only—not a made up one) “The little tikes upon his trikes,
Spin in circles all day long.
They scuffed their knees
When they were three,
Now they ride their trikes no more.” This quote shows elements of regionalism as a “tike” refers to a young child in some regions of the country; while a “trike” is an example of local dialect used to describe a bicycle with three wheels (tricycle). Further, the subject of the poem reflects realism as the setting of this quote is depicted in a way that “readers can recognize and relate to.”

2. Create a short story that reflects at least 3 of the elements of Realism, Regionalism, or Naturalism (see chart above #1 to help you). Your story must be 500 words and include the basic elements of a story (characters and a problem that must be solved). Suggestion: Pick a time period and a place (this could be the modern-day era and your neighborhood). Then create a story that reflects a problem that would happen in that time period and place and make sure the characters sound and act like they would in that time and place. (20pts)
Write your short story here (use as much space as you need):

3. Choose 3 quotes from the story you created in #2, and discuss how they show a characteristic of Realism, Regionalism, or Naturalism. (20pts)

Quote from Your Story
(1-2 lines) Name the characteristic of Realism, Regionalism, or Naturalism found in the quote. (Copy one of the characteristics from the top of the page here) Write 2+ sentences describing how this quote shows this characteristic of Realist, Regionalist, or Naturalistic thinking.

Refer to explorations in literature for a complete version of the text. in “letter from birmingham jail,” martin luther king, jr., presents the idea that american history includes african americans, too; that is, african americans can claim the same historical heritage as white americans. at the time, this was a radical idea. how does king develop this theme? select each correct answer. he points out the many ways that african americans have contributed to the culture of america. he describes how african americans were present “before plymouth rock” and through many key moments in american history. he argues that african americans would have participated in more events of american history if white americans had been willing to include them. he makes connections between the american fight for independence from britain and the civil rights movement.
