Lil had the largest garden in town. She'd been working on it for 20 years—much longer than most people had even lived in Redding. Everyone said that Lil's garden was the best they'd ever seen. It took up a quarter of an acre, and the local kids joked that people had gotten lost in there over the years. Parents, especially those hoping to instill a love of nature in their kids, would ask Lil if they could bring their kids by to see it. Lil never denied them, even though the flowers often got trampled under tiny feet. In Lil's opinion, if visiting her garden influenced kids to start one of their own someday, then it was definitely worth it.
