In the poem, 'My Ceremony For Taking', by Lara Mann, she described the pains she felt after her parents separated from each other. The word 'split', was used to describe the divorce of her parents. After the divorce, she returned to Alabama with her father.

Prior to the divorce, the family was already tensed as they exchanged hurtful words while quarrelling. After the divorce, Mann felt bad and would resort to taking off the hair in her skin so as to feel better.
