To do so, the author describes her feelings when the boy she likes and his family get to see her family's Christmas traditions, which she finds embarrassing because they differ from the American customs. Not only she criticizes her mother´s cooking, but also her entire family´s table manners. Only years after did she realize that her mother had cooked her favorite food for that Christmas Eve dinner, which shows Amy eventually came to terms with her conflict.

I understand the feeling of being embarrassed because of my family. Although in my case heritage is not a factor, I do have a family member with mental health issues that are very difficult for some people to understand. In order to ensure his safety, we had to develop certain practices and establish some rules that make it difficult to have friends over.
