India has a traditional custom of discrimination base on gender, considering females not only as a disgrace at birth but also preventing them from developing an academic career.

The obstacles women have to face are probably also preventing them from holding political roles that could grant them the power to change their place in the social structure.

And those who do hold the power to do so, men that have always benefited from the gender bias, are less likely to have any interest in making changes.
