1 Most people don't think much about the roles that kids have played in history. Children were a large part of the work force during the Industrial Revolution. By 1900, over two million children under age 16 had worked in terrible conditions. They worked in the textile mills, coal mines, and factories. They made clothing, shoes, and glass. In the beginning, there were no laws or regulations to protect children who worked in these places. Employers could also get away with paying children much less than adult workers. 2 Workplaces could be dangerous. The hours were long. Children worked with huge, heavy machines. They sometimes suffered severe injuries. Children working during the early days of the Industrial Revolution usually had to stop going to school It was the only way to keep their jobs. 3 For all these reasons, many children actively protested. They were part of the labor movement, too. They fought for better working conditions, higher pay, and fewer hours. Young female mill workers in Lowell, Massachusetts went on strike in 1836. They were protesting a reduction in their wages. Eventually they asked people to sign petitions to support their cause. They also created the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association. It was the first women's labor union in the United States. Which sentence would fit BEST if added to paragraph 2? A) The children were not very happy. B) The children did not get much sleep.
