Characterization refers to how the characters in a story are •represented by a symbol
•developed by the author
•interpreted by the reader
•related to one another

Think about something you might want to rent. an instrument? a book? a piece of equipment? do some internet research and find an organization in your city that can rent you an item of interest. find the terms of agreement, the period of rental, and any penalties or late fees. are there any special terms of use or waivers? now, imagine that you are an employee of that same organization. write a brief narrative taking the point of view of the store employee talking with a customer. imagine the customer did not know anything about the terms of agreement. be sure that your character explains the terms of agreement, as well as the details about the item being rented. be sure to include a beginning, middle, and end to your story as well as details. consider starting your story with the line: "it was a long day at [enter name of company here] when this [enter description here] looking customer came up to me and began asking me questions about [enter product description] that they wanted to " do you want your story to take a serious or comedic tone? have fun with the details, but be sure to include the information about the terms of agreement for the customer. your narrative should be at least 150-250 words in length.

Read the excerpt from julius caesar, act 5, scene 5. brutus. why this, volumnius. the ghost of caesar hath appeared to me two several times by night—at sardis once, and this last night, here in philippi fields. i know my hour is come. volumnius. not so, my lord. brutus. nay, i am sure it is, volumnius. thou seest the world, volumnius, how it goes. our enemies have beat us to the pit, [low alarums] it is more worthy to leap in ourselves than tarry till they push us. which prediction about the plot does this passage most support? brutus will replace caesar. brutus will take his own life. brutus will surrender to his enemies. brutus will be forever haunted by caesar.

Reread lines 6-7 "the survivor." determine how the tone of these differs from the preceding lines (1-5)
