He let his imagination go wild and write about his teachers being aliens. His teacher asks for a rewrite and told him not to do science fiction but Gary refuses.

Because of this Gary was taken to the principals office where he discovers that the principal is the alien.

The central idea teaches that people should not let other people's thought about them influence their decisions. Gary did not let his teachers discourage him from writing his story which eventually made him find out that aliens really exist.
