Mary's life changes completely. Back in India, her servants used to obey her and put up with her tantrums. She now finds that the maid will not tolerate her bad behavior and that the housekeeper is not an agreeable woman at all. Even though forbidden to do so, Mary begins to explore the mansion and the gardens of her uncle's estate. She soon finds the key to the garden that used to belong to her deceased aunt, which was locked by Mary's uncle once she died. Mary begins to take care of the garden. She makes friends with the gardener and with Dickon, a vivacious boy who has a magical relationship with nature, especially birds. Mary begins to change, becoming more empathetic and caring about others.

Mary eventually finds out about her cousin, Colin, who lives in the mansion and who is treated as if he had a physical problem that kept him from walking and going outside. It seems that Colin is a hypochondriac, but he soon gets better with the help of Mary and Dickon. The three of them spend a great deal of time outside, in the secret garden, playing together, getting healthier and stronger. Finally, Mary's uncle comes home to find his own son and the garden transformed for the better. He, who was extremely sad, finds happiness with his family.
