Prompt: On January 20, 2021, the US National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman delivered her original poem “The Hill We Climb” at the Inauguration of President Joseph R. Biden. The youngest person to ever read an inauguration poem, Ms. Gorman won over both the live and televised audience with her words that many felt captured the moment and importance of the transition of power from the 45th to the 46th president of the United States. Read the poem carefully. Then, in a well-written essay, analyze the rhetorical choices that Gorman makes to develop her argument that America can find hope within ourselves to overcome any difficulties that may have plagued us in the past, and soar to success in the future. Task:

This is an AP like Rhetorical Analysis Exam prompt. You WILL NOT write a full essay for this prompt; You will write an INTRODUCTORY paragraph and a BODY paragraph.
Read and annotate the poem for rhetorical strategies and argument/purpose.
Write an introductory paragraph (HOOK + Thesis). For this assignment you will write a CLOSED thesis statement (like the Ghandi Model)
When writing your thesis statement, it can be a mixture of style choices (DIDLS) or types of evidence. Remember to include ADJECTIVES in front of style choices. You can’t say the “writer uses diction” or the “the writer uses language”. For evidence, don’t just say “Examples” or “Details”; say “examples of . . .” or “details related to . . .”
