A grumpy old man once lived beside a river, and every night, he would wash his gold in the water. He never bought anything with his money—not even a birthday present for his granddaughter. He kept his gold in a fancy box until it was time to take it to the river. One day, he was busy washing his gold in the river when it slipped out of his hands. He tried to catch it, but the gold was quickly carried away by the river. “Oh, no!” he cried. Knowing not what else to do, he went home without his gold. When he got to his house, a farmer was waiting for him by his front door. The farmer was holding the old man’s gold in his hands. “I came to return this gold to you,” said the farmer. The old man was very surprised. “Why would you give this gold back to me?” he asked. The farmer smiled at the old man. “All you have is this gold to make you happy. I have lots of friends and family to love me and make me happy,” the farmer said. He gave the old man the gold and went on his way, singing a happy song. 1 What would be the best way to describe this piece of literature?
