Why do you think Russell ends Act 1 with the line bright new day'? Why might this be ironic?

Because we know that the boys will meet again and later find out they are brothers and subsequently die. This is a technique called dramatic irony as the audience knows that the boys die. Bright new day suggests that the next act will be a happy one but the audience know better.
