as a young girl, persephone (daughter of zeus and demeter) traveled around the world with her mother. demeter ruled over the world and all that grew from it. hades (king of the underworld) wanted to marry persephone, so he kidnapped her and took her to the underworld. demeter’s distress over the disappearance of her daughter caused the crops to wither and die. zeus was afraid a famine was imminent, so he sent hermes to fetch persephone. hades gave persephone a pomegranate. she ate the pomegranate, not realizing eating food from the underworld would keep her there. as a result, zeus ordered that persephone would spend part of the year on earth with demeter and part of the year in the underworld with hades. therefore, for most of the year, the earth is alive and covered with growing plants. however, during the barren months, when persephone is with hades, demeter mourns her daughter’s absence, and the earth is bare and lifeless.
