Electric vehicles have a reputation as being expensive, but that has changed in the past few years. Purchase prices have been dropping and a federal tax credit lowers their actual cost even more. The average cost of a brand new gas automobile is approximately $31,500. Most new electric cars are priced between $30,000 and $40,000. That is a higher initial cost, but when you factor in the $7,500 federal tax credit (and possibly additional state tax credits, depending on where you live), the price becomes comparable to that of a gasoline car. The annual costs associated with owning a car are much lower with an electric car. The average driver pays about $2,000 a year for gas. The average cost of electricity for a year of driving is $500. That will save $1,500 a year in fuel. Additionally, a more modern and streamlined engine will save drivers in other maintenance fees. One government study estimated that electric-car drivers will save over 40 percent in annual maintenance fees.
One of the biggest arguments against electric cars has been their limited range. Electric cars do have a shorter range, but that range is plenty for most drivers. The majority of American drivers travel less than 35 miles a day, and the average electric car has a range of about 100 miles on a full charge. Charging the car at home each night will provide enough power for daily driving and allow drivers to save time by avoiding stops at the gas station. And, as the number of electric cars on the road increases, more businesses and employers will install charging stations for their customers and employees, which will make charging a vehicle even easier.
An electric car may not be for everyone, but they have evolved beyond their original restrictions. With a purchase price that is comparable to a gas car, and reduced fuel and maintenance fees, anyone who is purchasing a new car should seriously consider an electric car.
