You should now be familiar with strategies to help improve your reading skills before, during, and after reading. Now you will put all these skills together in one informative reading presentation. This assessment has two parts. Read all parts of the assessment, including the rubric, before beginning. When you have completed all parts of this assessment, submit it to your instructor for grading in the 03.08 Gist the Thing For You assessment. This assessment is worth 150 points. Imagine that a teacher asks you to share your story about improving your reading skills with sixth graders who are struggling with and frustrated by reading. The teacher hopes your story will inspire the students to try some of the strategies you know, helping them to become better readers. In your presentation, you will share information you learned in this path and provide examples of your own work. You may choose from a variety of formats such as a slide show or web blog; visit the Web 2.0 Tools area for ideas. You may choose how to organize your presentation, but be sure to include these items: Part I: Reading Strategies Create a picture or text outline of the reading process that shows pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading strategies Give an example of how reading can be important to a specific career choice Explain why reading faster helps you learn more Include at least one idea for how to read faster Part II: Examples from Your Article Add your Gist Statement for your article choice Include an image of the Notes:TM or Mind Map for your article choice Explain why you chose this particular article to read Explain how the author’s purpose and point of view aids understanding, using your article as an example Include a picture, chart, table, or graph from your article and an example of how visuals help you understand what you read You can also use this lesson as an opportunity to complete your required collaboration assessment in the course by working with other students to create a Gist Statement.
