“A dream Deferred” originally was named “Harlem” where Langston Hughes was from. This poem Hughes uses poetic devices such as simile and personification to give an image to readers. It suggests that people shouldn’t delay their dream because the more they postpone them, the more the dreams will change and less likely they will come true. From the poem, it says “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” Raisin is an image of grapes dried up. Everyone knows it was a grape, but after it was put under the sun, it dried and was changed. This shows how when dream is delayed it wouldn’t be the same as original. However, “Dreams” this poem expresses the idea that one can’t give up on dreams and without dreams life is a waste. For example “Hold fast to dreams, for if dream die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.” Also at the very end, Langston Hughes wrote that“For when dreams go, Life is a barren field， Frozen with snow.” A barren field is a field with nothing; if you don’t have dreams then life would be nothing because nothing grows on a barren field. This is the differences between the two poems.You can see the two are different, but are closely related. The central theme of “A Dream deferred” and “Dreams” is dream just like the title. Both of these poems use description and symbolism.  It uses lines to describe life, for example from "A Dream Deferred" written "or fester like a sore, and then run?" If you have a sore, you want it to dry up so it will heal, but if it festers and runs, that means it is infected and will take longer to heal. It is like a dream that is getting farther and farther. An example from "Dreams," is "Life is a broken-winged bird." This describes how without dream, life is a waste. These lines show the description use with life. Both of these poems express life to show readers not to let go of dream because if you have a life then you must have a dream. Just like the poem, without a dream life is a waste. Even if you have a dream, hold on to it and not let go because you don’t know what would happen if it was postpone.
