I'm so glad I talked to John about my idea for next week's writing assignment. We're supposed to write a paragraph about a book we would recommend to the rest of the class. I like to read and have a bunch of books I really liked. I was going to suggest a book by Danielle Steele, but as John pointed out, guys don't read her books. Which is a good point. I should probably suggest something that everyone would like. So nix the romance authors. John suggested Marley and Me, which I read and liked. He said it would be good to do because the movie just came out. But I think that's a reason not to do it. A lot of people aren't going to want to read something they can see at the movies. So I have to come up with another book. Maybe I'll think of some titles and call my sister.
1) Do you get the idea from Alyssa's notes that discussing was a good prewriting strategy?
A. No, she seemed disappointed that she couldn't write about a book by Danielle Steele.
B. Yes, she and John seem to be good friends.
C. No, she still doesn't have a book to write about.
D. Yes, she got another perspective on her idea for writing.
2) Can Alyssa use discussing as a prewriting strategy for papers in other courses?
A. Yes, she can use discussing as a prewriting strategy in other courses.
B. In fact, she can use any prewriting strategy for papers in other courses.
C. Prewriting strategies can be used to get ideas for any kind of writing you do, not just college writing.
D. All of these are true.
3) This student decides to write a list of all the books she enjoyed reading without stopping. What prewriting strategy does this method describe?
A. discussing
B. planning
C. clustering
D. brainstorming
4) The student writes down the name of a humorous book. She then writes a few reasons the book was funny and connects these ideas to the name of the book with a line. What prewriting strategy did this student use?
A. planning
B. writing journal
C. brainstorming
D. clustering
5) To get some ideas, the student writes about one book she really enjoyed reading. She writes for several minutes and does not bother to check her spelling or grammar. Which technique is she using before writing her essay?
A. focused freewriting
B. brainstorming
C. clustering
D. writing journal
