Read the passage by a student from Miami-Palmetto High School in Pinecrest, Florida. From “Volunteering Is Vital” by Sharon Goldberg

Helping to build a house for an impoverished family gives the volunteer—especially a dedicated one—a greater sense of what it is like to give and to receive.

At the same time—volunteers are acquiring life skills, such as the following: learning how to put up drywall; and learning how to operate a power saw.

Learning to work as part of the home-building team provides the volunteer with an experience that will most likely be cherished forever.
