Kindness

The main theme in this short story is the power of kindness. The story shows how a kind gesture can soften the heart of a thieving teenager. When Roger gets caught by Mrs. Jones, he expects her to take him to the police. But her kind gesture in taking him to her home and giving him dinner touches him, and he feels grateful to her. He tries to find words to show his gratefulness for her kindness, but he is not able to find words to express it.

    Forgiveness

When Roger gets caught, he expects punishment. However, he receives kindness and forgiveness instead. This story shows how forgiveness and do things that punishment cannot. Roger, when he is forgiven, wants to prove himself trustworthy to Mrs. Jones, which would not have happened if he had been taken to jail.

  Trust

Hughes tries to depict trust as a give and take relationship. Mrs. Jones takes the boy home and shows him trust and kindness, and this makes the boy want to prove himself trustworthy to her. When Mrs. Jones leaves the boy alone with the purse, to go and make dinner, he sits where she can look at him, he did not want to be mistrusted now."
