Flood basalt. A flood basalt just keeps pouring massive amounts of basaltic lava onto the surface of the earth, dumping quite a lot of stuff into the air too. The Siberian Traps are implicated in the Permian Extinction 250 million years ago. Not only did the basalt itself bring up CO2 of it’s own, but it happened to come up through a massive coal deposit and brought up even more CO2 in the process. The resulting global warming heated the oceans to the point where the methyl hydrate on the ocean floors broke down and released a whole lot of methane, an even more potent greenhouse gas. The 20 degree global warming which resulted killed of as much as 95% of living species.

Las trampas siberianas están implicadas en la extinción del Pérmico hace 250 millones de años.
