The Friendly Dolphins Fifi was a very friendly dolphin, and he loved his home in the Kaima River basin. Besides Fifi and his large family, the river was also home to many other fish and plants. The Kaima River was clean even though it flowed through many cities and towns, and its water was so clear that people could see the pebbles and plants on the bottom of the riverbed. People would often come to the river to relax and swim. Though many of them brought picnic lunches, they were careful not to litter the place, and none of them ever threw any rubbish into the river.
The dolphins were friendly and Fifi was happy to see all the people, especially the children who came to play and swim. Fifi's parents had always told him to watch out for the children. They felt it was their responsibility to keep an eye on them and to help them if ever they were in trouble. The dolphins were grateful for this.
The only dolphin that was not happy with the visitors was Bebe. Bebe was ill-tempered and sulky most of the time. He did not like sharing the river with the people who came to visit. "This is our home, I do not want them coming here," he would say angrily and would do his best to scare away people who came to swim in the river.
One day a little boy named Martinez dove into the river and started swimming. The boy was a very good swimmer, and Fifi and his friends followed him as he swam. They were enjoying watching him have fun in their river—all, except Bebe. When Bebe noticed the boy swimming, he nosed his way under the water to where the boy was and butted him from below. Martinez was alarmed and wondered what was happening. Luckily for him, Fifi and his friends had noticed Bebe. They swam swiftly toward Martinez and shooed Bebe away. "Bebe, stop that!" said Fifi. "If you behave in this manner, people will stop visiting us, and we will be very lonely." Then, Fifi and his friends swam along with Martinez until he was safe.
When Martinez went home, he told his parents about his experience with the dolphins. The next day Martinez and his parents arrived at the river with a TV news reporter. The news of the helpful dolphins came out on TV the next week. Many more people started coming to the river. Fifi and his friends were proud and happy as people took their pictures.
