fast its timed..The public's view of heroes in the United States has changed throughout the last century. In past centuries, many countries' military leaders or religious figures such as Joan of Arc were regarded as heroes. During World War I and World War II in the twentieth century, members of the military in our country were viewed as heroes. But as radio, movies, and television became commonplace in United States during the last hundred years, the heroes changed to entertainment and sports stars. In the later part of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century, many people looked to stars, such as Jesse Ventura or Britney Spears, to help them choose their values. Children modeled their behavior after cartoon characters. The Ninja Turtles, Mighty Mouse, and Power Rangers became heroes because they saved characters in their TV shows. However, something happened during the fall of 2001 that changed the type of heroes people in the United States admired. After the attack on the World Trade Center, people began to regard firemen and policemen as heroes because they exposed their lives to danger or sacrificed their lives attempting to save others. (Some of the information and ideas in this paragraph have been adapted from Macionis, J. J.(2003). Sociology (9th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall.) A conclusion that can be drawn from this passage is that O A. radio, movies, and television have propelled entertainment and sports stars into the limelight over the last hundred years. This excerpt is from “the poet” by alfred, lord tennyson. the poem describes a poet's consciousness and perception. which three lines suggest the richness of a poet's thoughts? thus truth was multiplied on truth, [the world like one great garden show'd,] and thro' the wreaths of floating dark upcurl'd, rare sunrise flow'd. [and freedom rear'd in that august sunrise] her beautiful bold brow, when rites and forms before his burning eyes melted like snow. [there was no blood upon her maiden robes] sunn'd by those orient skies; but round about the circles of the globes of her keen eyes and in her raiment's hem was traced in flame wisdom, a name to shake [all evil dreams of power--a sacred name.] and when she spake, [her words did gather thunder as they ran,] and as the lightning to the thunder which follows it, riving the spirit of man, making earth wonder, so was their meaning to her words. no sword of wrath her right arm whirl'd, [ but one poor poet's scroll, and with 'his' word] she shook the world.
