Essay #1 Cloning Assignment:

• Please discuss the issue of cloning as it exists in Chapters 1-15 in The House of the Scorpion.

• Please give your opinion about cloning, giving at least two reasons to support the way you feel about it.

• How does your opinion of cloning compare with the ideas about cloning represented in the book? Please give at least two references about cloning from the book, and discuss that comparison.

Some of the questions and issues you might include in your discussion:

o If you needed to have some sort of stem cell treatment, knowing that stem cells and the subsequent treatment using stem cells are a form of cloning, would you agree to having stem cell treatment?

o Would you permit and encourage someone you love, like a child, a family member, or a friend, to have stem cell treatment for a potentially dangerous disease? If so, why? If not, why not?

o If you think that cloning, in any way, is a potential way of handling the medical and personal issues of human beings, how would you suggest regulating cloning, so that we don’t end up like the society in our book?

o Do you have any ideas about how to keep the good part of cloning, and not let the bad part of cloning take over?
