Steven and James emerged from the trees and walked along a sloping open area to the river. The rippling river sparkled like diamonds in the sun, and the boys couldn’t resist the urge to stop and soak up the scenery. They watched as tiny insects danced a ballet across the water. As they rested their feet, both boys gazed north toward the unpredictable volcano they had become so familiar with. It was magnificent, even with the usual cloud of steam rising above it. As they watched, though, they noticed that something around them was changing. The cloud on the volcano’s peak suddenly grew larger, and the ground began to shake beneath them.

James said, “I wonder—” He didn’t have time to finish the rest of his sentence. As they looked on in stunned silence, the top of Big White Peak suddenly exploded and erupted. For a split second, everything was soundless. Steven and James stared, mesmerized by a huge, dark cloud streaked with blue and orange flashes. Then, as the roar of the sound reached them, both boys jumped up and began to sprint back to their car. They scrambled up the rugged hillside, tripping over rocks and branches without stopping.

“Look!” shouted James, looking over his shoulder as he ran. The cloud was growing larger, and it seemed to be coming toward them with a tremendous amount of speed. Steven didn’t think they needed to be concerned about the cloud itself because the wind was blowing in the opposite direction and they were quite far from the crater. What he was worried about most, however, was that they might be caught in a flood. He hoped they could get away before the snow and ice from the Big White Peak melted in the heat of the eruption. The boys ran over the rugged terrain, glancing back nervously on the way to the car.

As they drove away, heading for safety, they watched in amazement as a great wall of water carrying mud, rocks, and trees crashed down the mountain. In a matter of minutes, the grass and flowers were gone and the sparkling river had turned gray. Still numb with shock, they turned out of the park and onto the highway toward home.
