Ponyboy is described as different from the rest of the Greasers at the very beginning of the novel. He says that he enjoys reading, drawing, and watching movies, but that the rest of the gang is not interested in things like that.

Ponyboy is trying to convince himself that Darry doesn't care for him or love him, because of how hard Darry is on Ponyboy. Despite all of the attempts, Ponyboy knows that he is lying to himself about Darry. He knows that Darry is hard on him, because he loves him.

Tough is the same as rough; tuff means cool, sharp—like a tuff-looking Mustang or a tuff record.
